The droidcon Italy team are excited to share the news that the 2018 edition will take place at a brand new venue, the newly refurbished OGR in central Turin.
The OGR – Officine Grande Riparazioni – brings together old and new, creation and refurbishment, industrial and technological, artistic and scientific, in one space, to be enjoyed by all. The venue was finally re-opened mid 2017, following a one hundred million euro investment by the CRT Foundation, and we are extremely pleased to be bringing droidcon to this special and very unique complex.
The OGR was originally opened in 1895, between the train stations Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, as the major repair workshop for locomotives in Turin. Employing 2,000 workers, it was the largest industrial facility in town. As Turin has moved its focus from industry to technology, so too, the OGR: the Officine Sud are dedicated to research and innovation in the digital, creative and social fields.
The H-shaped complex of the OGR includes two major wings: the Officine Sud and the Officine Nord. While the South Offices are structured as a flexible working space, the North Offices are an open multifunctional exhibition space made up of: the ‘platforms’, the ‘duomo’, and the Sala Fucine. While retaining traces of the building’s past – including graffiti on some of the walls – the space is equipped entirely with the best audio & visual tools & technologies. The intention, the modus operandi and the ambiance of the OGR are a perfect match for droidcon in the year of ‘Android for business’, and sets the pace for a highly valuable droidcon edition.
