Google‘s recently-introduced Android Things aims to make Android work as an IoT platform. Sadly, a lot of pitfalls need to be observed – for example, be aware that timing is not all what it promises to be!
Being able to run Android on a Raspberry Pi 3 sounds like a dream – especially as Google provides a variety of APIs which allow yot to access GPIO and other hardware interfaces effortlessly. Sadly, problens start to arise when this idea is taken to practice: nothing is quite as it seems.
This talk starts out by giving an overview of Android Things, and proceeds to denonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of the platform by linking it up to various hardware components. Finally, a combinatorial solution will be discussed which alleviates many of the latency problems inherent in Android‘s design.
